These papers represent part of the contributions to the symposium, "North American Native Studies: their programs and contributions," for the XLI International Congress of Americanists. The symposium was proposed and organized for the purpose of assesing the value and contributions of these relatively new programs in their approaches to and perspectives on North American Native cultures as well as in their opening of opportunities for North American Native students. A secondary purpose was to provide information for other groups and institutions interested in establishing such departments and programs to "sensitize" them to the problems involved.en_US
