A reconnaissance test drilling program was conducted in 1968 and 1969 in the southwestern portion of the Souris River basin to provide hydrogeologic information on several shallow unconfined aquifers in the area. One of the aquifers, referred to as the Broomhill Experimental Aquifer, was then chosen for detailed studies of its hydrologic response and yield characteristics. The water-table configurations, lateral boundaries, gross internal properties and thickness variations were determined using a relatively detailed network of water-table wells and drill holes. The aquifer underlies an area of 25 square miles, generally ranges in thickness between 10 and 40 feet, and is bounded on its northern periphery by relatively impervious glacial till, and on its eastern periphery by low permeability silts and fine sands of lacustrine origin. The southern boundary is a groundwater divide. The aquifer is traversed from west to east by Stony Creek, a small ephemeral stream... It is concluded that the Broomhill Experimental Aquifer is a significant source of high-quality water in the Souris River basin. The hydrologic controls on the aquifer system are such that optimal development of the groundwater resource could only be attained by instituting a detailed water management scheme.en_US
