Homelessness is a major issue in Canada and individuals with a mental illness are overrepresented in this population. Research suggests creative arts leisure can contribute to mental illness recovery but there is a dearth in research exploring participation among individuals experiencing homelessness in the context of post-colonial Canada. Fourteen adult participants who had experiences of homelessness and a mental illness were recruited from a humanitarian organization serving impoverished individuals. Thematic analysis methods were utilized to derive data from semi structured interviews and an art based session focus group. This research contributed knowledge about participant experiences of creative arts and arts contribution to mental illness recovery. The role of culture, environment, and healthcare systems in participant lives was explored which identified how these macro factors influenced creative arts participation particularly barriers. Barriers to creative arts recreation and leisure specifically due to poverty and homelessness were also identified in the findings.en_US
