| dc.description.abstract | Animal welfare concerns and rapidly increasing animal populations are becoming more prevalent throughout Canada and other parts of the world. Thousands of animals are reported to enter shelters annually, most often as strays, in addition to being relinquished, born in the shelter, or transferred from other facilities. Oftentimes the cost of veterinary care, lack of pet ownership knowledge, and proximity to these resources contribute to whether pets receive veterinary care or have poor welfare. The animal shelter model was designed to combat these concerns and facilitate temporary accommodations for stray and abandoned animals awaiting adoption. However, the current design standards and practices that exist are influenced by human anthropometrics and can often be detrimental to the physical and psychological health of animals living in these environments. This in turn leads to several negative responses including the expression of adverse behaviours (i.e. barking, aggression, fear), prolonged shelter stays and adoptions, and increased euthanasia rates. This practicum will explore the relationship between animal shelter typologies and animal welfare; and how the interior design of these environments influences the well-being of adoptable animals. Additionally, it will address community needs that improve animal welfare long-term by responding to marginalized communities and those without access to affordable veterinary care. This will be accomplished using design strategies that focus on creating an atmosphere conducive to community education, promoting access to healthcare resources, and addressing the needs of domestic animals. These strategies were chosen as an approach to re-envision animal shelter and care typologies to increase the number of animals that become, and remain, adopted.
