Manuscript 1 evaluated energy and mineral concentration of sainfoin, grown alone or in mixtures with grass cultivars. Results indicated that in general, sainfoin treatments harvested at 50% and 80% bloom could satisfy energy requirements of backgrounding cattle. Moreover, sainfoin could satisfy beef cattle requirements for K, however Ca, P and Mg supplementation would likely be required. Manuscript 2 used a series of in vitro experiments to examine ruminal fermentation and CH4 production of AAC Mountainview, with or without canola supplementation. Findings indicated that pure sainfoin had lower DMD and higher CH4, compared to all other treatments and CH4 increased with advancing harvest date. In Experiment 2, a positive relationship existed between rate of canola meal supplementation and DMD, though CM supplementation had no effect on CH4 production. Findings from Experiment 3 indicate that supplementing canola oil at 3% of DM can elicit reductions in CH4 production.en_US
