Abstract
This Master of Interior Design practicum focuses on developing an understanding of the unique and diverse design needs of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer (LGBTQ+) older adults. The existing body of research in LGBTQ+ rights and gerontological design indicates that the generation currently retiring aspire to be independent for as long as possible and would like for their individual identity to be respected. With this practicum I hope to contribute to the work that is already being done for the care of 2SLGBTQ+ elders to provide Winnipeg, Manitoba with an inclusive, safe, and accessible environment. LGBTQ+ research emphasises that community connection and access to inclusive healthcare is critical to the health and well-being of LGBTQ+ elders. The practicum design intention is to create a housing complex with graduated levels of care that actively promotes partners living out their lives together and offers an environment that encourages community interaction.
