Abstract
This research work presents "MA-Edge", a novel multi-level mid-air hand gesture(s)-based target selection and interaction technique for large display screens utilizing the screen edges. MA-Edge works with crossing-targets placed along the screen boundaries where users can select them by simply crossing them near the screen edge. We present results from two controlled studies. In the first study, we investigate first-level MA-Edge interaction design parameters, such as input region configurations, with target selection performance and arm fatigue measurement, for optimizing the interaction performance and output. The results show that some edges, input region configurations and target locations perform better than others and also that MA-Edge can support a large number of targets at the first level of the MA-Edge menu. In the follow-up study, we do a comparative evaluation of second-level target selection between MA-Edge with linear menu and Point-and-Select target selection techniques with linear and grid menu configurations, through target selection performance and consumed endurance measurements. The results show that MA-Edge alone at both levels outperforms the combination method for target selection, quantitatively and qualitatively. This work also provides information on other potential interactions using only MA-Edge and MA-Edge in combination with other interaction techniques.
