Oxidative stress is a deleterious process that causes various pathological processes in humans and animals. The objectives of this study were to investigate the changes in oxidative status in weaned piglets after an E. coli K88+ challenge and to determine the effects of dietary supplementation of red osier dogwoods plant products and epidermal growth factor (EGF) on oxidative stress in these piglets. TBARS and superoxide dismutase enzyme activity were measured as oxidative stress biomarkers. E. coli challenge caused oxidative stress in weanling piglets. Dietary supplementation of red osier dogwoods plant products attenuated oxidative stress induced by E. coli challenge in weanling piglets. Further, dietary supplementation of epidermal growth factor also attenuated the generation of free radicals in E. coli challenged weanling piglets. This study concluded that red osier dogwoods as well as EGF can protect weanling piglets from oxidative stress induced by infectionen_US
