This thesis examines the growth patterns of apartment development for the Winnipeg metropolitan area within the context of the evolving spatial structure from 1900 to 1975. It is concerned with the general distribution pattern of apartments as well as the emerging trends of accelerated apartment development in the suburban areas and the concentration of high-rise activity in the core area of the central city. The thesis identifies the prime determinants of apartment development as the result of the joint efforts of the municipal councils in actively promoting this type of development due to its favourable municipal revenues, and of the initiatives and abilities of certain developers to undertake major apartment projects.en_US
