Abstract
This was a descriptive study focused on variations in the educational experiences of elementary school children living in an environmentally deprived area of Winnipeg, involving a group of children achieving satisfactorily and a similar group of children achieving unsatisfactorily at school. The variables studies were -- the adequacy of school equipment, attendance at educationally structured pre-school activities, parental interest, and school mobility. The project was completed in Winnipeg, Maitoba, from October, 1965 to April, 1966. A sample of forty-seven children was selected by the classroom teachers in October, 1965, and data was obtained as to the child's school performance on the basis of the teacher's evaluation. Data was also obtained by means of direct interviews with the parents of the children, employing a schedule. An analysis of the findings revealed that there were variations in the educational experiences of the children in each group. A greater proportion of the children performing satisfactorily had attended eduationally structured pre-school activities, such as kindergarten and nursery school, and were members of families in which the parents demonstrated an interest in their child's school performance. The two other factors studies, the adequacy of school equipment and the frequency of school moves, were demonstraed to not be factors adversely affecting school performance.
