Abstract
In response to the scarcity of affordable housing, this practicum project advocates micro-living as a potential solution to mitigate the current housing issue in Vancouver. The lack of affordable housing has led to and continues to displace Millennials and post-Millennials from the city, that in-turn questions the future of the housing domain in Metro Vancouver. Drawing on historical Utopian concepts, this practicum renders ‘Home’ as the new Utopia by recontextualizing and forming a new Millennial Utopian vision in the form of micro-apartments that is suggested to be a potential solution in today’s time to retain people from moving out of Metro Vancouver. Informed by various concepts such as theory of micro-living, theory of smart-living and theory of well-being, the vision aims to foster a sense of community that comprises advanced technology and an affordable healthy living environment.
Adhering to redefined utopian micro-living concepts, this practicum project proposes sustainable small-living housing comprising micro-apartments and other amenities at 138 Main Street, Vancouver. In doing so, it explores the incorporation of interior design strategy of reconfigurable interiors and ideas to formulate efficient and flexible spaces to develop self-contained rental apartments to address the issue of affordability in the city of Vancouver.
