Abstract
Price had tasked the team with designing a new LFDC diffuser lid used for PAO testing that would be easily manufacturable, would properly seal the diffuser while testing, and would be reusable for at least 300 cycles of use. The team came up with a design which included modifying the adapter of the existing lid/adapter setup by using U-beams to support the top plate of the adapter on either of the shorter side of the cutout. This design change reduces the deflection to 0.07581 mm for a 1’ × 4’ adapter and will not fail due to fatigue after 300+ cycles. The feasibility of using potting as an adhesive to hold the adapter together was also analyzed. Analysis had shown that the maximum shear stress experienced by the beam supports is less than the shear strength of the adhesive, making potting a viable adhesive for the adapter manufacturing process. Finally, the cost of a 1’ × 4’ adapter was determined to be $281.88 CAD. This cost fits within the cost requirements the client initially proposed in the project application. With this new design, the client can speed up their custom order LFDC production while keeping their costs down.
