dc.description.abstractWinpak Ltd. assigned Team 8 to design a system which packages a minimum of 48 slotted rails filled with spouted pouches into a standard box sized 420x800x420 mm. The main requirements were for the system to contain zero safety hazards, the system accommodate the expected production rate of seven seconds per full rail, and the system package the full rails without damaging any of the pouches. Team 8 was able to achieve each of the client’s requirements through thorough project definition, concept generation and detailed design. The team performed fatigue and fracture analyses, Failure Modes and Effects Analysis, and a safety analysis to implement improvements and confirm the requirements of the project. The team produced the required project deliverables of a 3D CAD model of the final design, technical engineering drawings of the components, a Bill of Materials and estimated cost for materials, manufacture and installation. Team 8 achieved the objective of the project by designing a Spouted Pouches Rail Stacking System that creates a packaging arrangement of full rails in which the pouches are interleaved together, maximizing the use of space in a box.en_US
