dc.description.abstractThis thesis is concerned with an investigation into the hitherto little discussed relationship between the settlement of the Oregon Boundary Question and the arrival of British Troops at the Red River Settlement. The Oregon Question has received much attention and the development of trouble at Red River has been explored, but little has been done to show the relationship that existed between them. However, before examining the nature of these crises, it is necessary to take a cursory glance at the geography of the Canadian West, the early history of the colony at Red River and the background of the Oregon dispute.
