dc.description.abstractThis thesis describes the detailed response of a 20-in Super-Kamiokande Photomultiplier Tube (PMT). In particular the relative efficiency, transit time, transit time-spread, and single-photoelectron gain are mapped over the face of the PMT. These characteristics of the PMT are measured for different magnitudes of ambient magnetic field ranging from -100 mG to 100 mG. The measurements are done separately for the PMT in water and air. Detailed measurements of these PMT’s responses over their face have not been reported before, and will be useful inputs to studies of Super-Kamiokande detector systematic uncertainties. On average the variation in relative efficiency is 1% for PMT in water and 2% for the PMT in air. The RMS value of transit time and the transit time-spread of the PMT are found to change from 0.66 ns to 0.74 ns and 2.58 ns to 2.63 ns, respectively. Measurement shows the gain of the PMT varies from 362 to 400 in the ADC unit.en_US
