dc.description.abstract | In recent times signs of premature deterioration are identified in joint areas of concrete pavements. The root causes and underlying mechanisms behind this deterioration are still not fully understood but the use of de-icers has been suspected to aggravate the deterioration. Hence, this thesis aims at understanding the role of de-icer salts and identifying aspects contributing to this joint deterioration in the field. Also, it evaluates the performance of concrete containing nanoparticles to resist damaging effects of freezing-thawing actions in presence of various de-icing salts. The investigation revealed that the cores collected from deteriorated joints had high intensity of micro-cracks and most air voids were filled with various levels of secondary depositions. This is explained by a combination of physical and chemical aspects, due to the interaction of salts and freezing/thawing cycles. In laboratory study, all the nano-modified concrete specimens were able to resist the detrimental effects of freezing-thawing action. | en_US |
