Induction, maintenance and release of seed dormancy are crucial in cereal crops such as wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) to avoid precocious germination and at the same time make them quickly ready for industrial processing or planting. Seed dormancy is regulated mainly by two phytohormones; abscisic acid (ABA) induces and maintains seed dormancy whereas gibberellins (GA) release it and, as a result, ABA–GA balance decides the dormancy status of seeds. Other hormones are also known to regulate seed dormancy mainly via their influences on ABA–GA balance. Jasmonates (JAs) have been reported to have apparent effects on seed dormancy in several plant species; however, only little is known if the effect of JAs on dormancy regulation involves ABA and GA. To this effect, this thesis investigated changes in the expression patterns of ABA, GA and jasmonate metabolism and signaling genes and the levels of the three hormones during seed maturation by using dormant and non-dormant genotypes, and in response to hormone, after-ripening or cold treatments. The findings of this thesis provide important insights into the roles of JAs and their interaction with ABA and GA in the regulation of dormancy in wheat.en_US
