| dc.description.abstract | The goal of this research was to provide an understanding of the impact of coastal resort tourism on tourism participation amongst the local people of Hopkins Village ¬– and the potential benefits they derive from these resorts. The research also partly focused on the impact of resort tourism on the Garifuna culture. A qualitative research approach was adopted which utilized a case study as a strategy of enquiry, semi-structured interviews and participant observation as data collection techniques. The research was conducted from January to February 2015. The results that emerged from the study indicated that the community of Hopkins depends heavily on the resorts for their livelihood. In fact, the resorts employ majority of the local people with very few owning their own businesses. However, resentments towards the big resorts were expressed – from marginalization, exclusion and very little to no benefits accrued and invested into the community – which is regarded as being crucial to the development of the community as a whole.
