Abstract
Distributed optical fiber sensing (DOFS) is a set of technologies that are characterized by their ability to use optical fiber as the sensing mechanism. This allows for measurements to be obtained from any spatial location along the fiber. It can be used in environments where wired, or wireless technologies cannot always be deployed, such as in high temperature environments. It also allows for sensing over long distances without the need for batteries or power to remote locations. Although there are papers describing the development of DOFS systems for various applications, often the literature does not provide an adequate description of the physics of light scattering required to understand the technology in these systems. A review of light scattering with respect to this technology is provided. Additionally, the development of a simulator for a coherent phase-OTDR is described. This simulator provides a means of comparing theory with experiment for DOFS applications.
