Abstract
This practicum began as a response to the recognition of the increasing worldwide population of the older adult demographic. It was approached as a way to use design as a practical response to serve the societal issue of improving the wellbeing of this demographic. Ongoing research continued to inform the process focusing on the many varied elements that contribute to the health and wellness of older adults. Various components of health were identified such as physical, social, and psychological wellbeing, and additionally the need to look at ways to improve the overall quality of life versus the treatment of a single medical concern. These categories were approached through the lens of quality of life and active ageing to provide a targeted response specific to the needs of this population. The design in this practicum, therefore, responded to these needs by providing a “one-stop-shop” facility responding to ways to maintain and improve quality of life for older adults through medical care, social interactions, creative opportunities, and new physical activity options. This approach looks at the concept of health through many different categories and addresses the need and benefit to consider them holistically.
