Abstract
This paper looks closely at peacebuilding and healing work at the North Point Douglas Women’s Centre (NPDWC) in Winnipeg, Manitoba in response to the crisis of violence against Indigenous women throughout Canada. This work provides an overview of peacebuilding work that is ongoing at the NPDWC by utilizing a braid as a metaphor. The three strands of this braid include: meeting basic needs, supporting the women at the centre in a variety of ways, and being an accessible safe space in the community. Further, to provide a stronger understanding of the peacebuilding work at the NPDWC, violence, healing, safe space and culturally appropriate programs and services are defined in relationship and importance to this process. This paper provides recommendations that focus on what is needed for this work to continue at the centre and expanding outwards — by understanding the work going on at the North Point Douglas Women’s Centre (NPDWC) as peacebuilding work and providing for long-term financial support for the centre.
