Abstract

The practicum presents a restorative landscape design for the Behavioural Health Foundation (BHF) in the neighbourhood of St. Norbert, Winnipeg, Manitoba. BHF is a transitional, residential mental health and addiction treatment center for men, women and dependent children. The design explorations focus on the cultivation of food, the creation of therapeutic garden spaces, and practical, functional improvements to the BHF property. The practicum also documents the various research that informed the design: site visits to European therapeutic gardens conducted in spring of 2019, interviews with staff and residents of BHF, site analysis of the BHF property, and study of nature-based restoration methods and theories.
