Abstract
The needs of people living with HIV outside of Winnipeg, in Manitoba, are unknown. Evidence suggests this population experiences health disparity compared to peers living in larger centres. A mixed-methods needs assessment examined needs using the following data sources: semi-structured interviews; questionnaires about patient activation; access, use and acceptance of telephone and Internet; and demographics. Quantitative analysis described participants’ characteristics. Interpretive description and content analysis of qualitative data was used to describe needs. Qualitative and quantitative data were merged using joint display to illustrate patterns of needs. Seventeen adults with diverse characteristics prioritized nine common needs. Internet use was common (n = 14). Needs related to participant characteristics of age, gender, and others. Access to peer-support was a predominant need. Findings guided recommendations to address identified needs. Action is necessary at clinical, research and policy levels to reduce disability related to contextual factors when living at a distance from services.
