    Abstract
Perkins discusses the contributions made by women writers to debates on the virtue and moral education of women in the eighteenth century. Using examples from Frances Burney, Maria Edgeworth, Elizabeth Hamilton, and Jean Marishall, Perkins suggests that their ideas of virture were more complex than is generally recognized today.
