Abstract

Elmer’s Manufacturing Ltd. designs, develops, and manufactures specialized agricultural equipment, and operates an overhead monorail system for its painting line. The main objective of the project is to design a powered system that safely moves trolleys that are suspending the parts along the I-beam monorail network. The powered system is expected to reduce the manual labour required to move heavy parts suspended from the monorail system from three people to one. Various concepts were generated and evaluated. The winning design concept was a powered trolley unit that rides on the monorail, and the client approved of this design. The design was developed to a battery powered unit which includes a brushless DC motor, speed reducer and chain drive system, 48V lead-acid battery assembly, remote pendant, and frame structures. The final design meets the client’s needs and specifications and is within the budget. In the long term, it is recommended to install powered rails to the monorail to eliminate the need for batteries, but this was beyond the allotted budget. To make effective use of the design, a new junction and parking space for the design will need to be added to the monorail. Since the design is capable of moving the required loads, and has been designed with safety in mind, the objective of this project has been achieved.
