Abstract

MacDon requires a more effective drying system for its paint line. It’s current system, which uses air cannons, does not remove all standing water from parts, requiring manual labour to finish the process. The solution to this problem is to replace the existing air cannons with a semi-automated design consisting of air knives attached to sensor-controlled linear actuators. The sensors detect the part dimensions and send a signal to the linear actuators, which then move the air knives to maintain the optimal distance between the air knives and parts. The design is made primarily of off-the-shelf parts and simple to manufacture components. It is simple, efficient, and easy to maintain. To reduce costs, it reuses many of the components currently in place, such as the air blowers and mounting frames. This design is expected to cost $48,016 and save MacDon $61,440 annually.
