Abstract
We test the static Stark shift of the transition from the ground state to the first excited s state in 87Rb, providing an experimental verification of the relativistic many-body calculations of this value performed by Safronova, Johnson, and Derevianko. The experiment is conducted on atoms held in a magneto-optical-trap, using the facility and equipment used for the Francium Parity Non-Conservation Experiment. We describe the equipment including some notes on its use and preparation, the experimental procedure, and the experimental results. We obtain a value of 0.6056 +/- 3.4 X 10^-3 MHz/(kV/cm)^2, giving good experimental agreement with the values calculated for the Stark shift of the 5s to 6s transition by Safronova et al.
