The purpose of this thesis is to demonstrate that a pulse-width-modulated static compensator is capable of performing three-phase load balancing and power factor correction. An unbalanced load is analysed using sequence component theory and a mathematical solution found to satisfy the load balancing and power factor correction requirements. Two types of pulse-width modulation to implement this theory are investigated--sinusoidal pulse width modulation and current reference pulse width modulation. Control systems have been developed for both methods. Both methods have then been simulated using PSCAD/EMTDC software with the results analysed for dynamic response, steady state response and harmonic content.en_US
