Abstract
The primary purpose of this inquiry was to determine if the series of Manitoba Senior 4 English Language Arts provincial exams, written between January 1996 and May 1998, have affected the instructional and assessment practices of Senior 4 English Language Arts teachers and, if there has been an influence, the extent of it. In order to gauge the extent of the changes in teaching practices that actually occurred after 1995, Senior 4 English Language Arts classroom teachers were surveyed only on their perceptions of the effects of the Senior 4 provincial exam on their teaching practices because the exam is a common, universal experience for all Manitoba Senior 4 teachers and undoubtedly one that has a significant impact on each one professionally. Teachers were surveyed on their course content, their selection of texts, their instructional strategies, and their class work assessment and evaluation practices 'as a result of' the implementation of the Senior 4 English Language Arts provincial exams.
