dc.description.abstract Environmental noise in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) setting is well documented as a variable that affects the physiologic and psychologic health of patients. The ICU patient who is not able to escape from, or control the source, duration or intensity of the noise is placed at risk by the very environment that is meant to be therapeutic. A convenience sample of 36 adult patients admitted to an ICU was used to determine if listening to 20 minutes of soothing music would significantly decrease noise induced annoyance as measured by a Visual Analogue Scale and a modification of Baker's Annoyance to ICU Noise Index. Sixteen females and 20 males with a mean age of 61.3 years (range 33-84 years) served as their own controls. A quasi-experimental design was used where participants completed the Visual Analogue Scale and a modification of Baker's Annoyance to ICU Noise Index following a 20 minute control interval and again after listening to 20 minutes of soothing classical or contemporary music.
