Description
Tembec applied the Criteria and Indicators for Sustainable Forests developed by the Canadian Council of Forest Ministers (1995 version) to the FML01. The report includes background information on the development of the indicators as well as the process taken by the ManitobaModelForest to develop local level indicators. This report assesses the forestry practices in each province based on harvesting practices (mostly clear-cuts), protection of species at risk and area of forest certified. There is also a map showing accessed forestland in Canada. Main criticisms for Manitoba include: environmental assessment of logging plans are weak, hydroelectric development is a major concern to the boreal forest and clear cutting occurs in provincial parks.

As part of a global study of large intact forest landscapes, based on remotely sensed data and maps, this report is tailored to Canadian landscapes. The report lists a large number of expert reviewers. Among the key findings are that half of Canada’s forests are large and intact, mostly located in northern Canada; that most of the northern boreal forest is intact while most of the southern boreal forest is not; and only a small proportion of intact areas are located in protected areas.

The Sustainable Forestry Initiative® (SFI) program is a  comprehensive system of principles, objectives and   performance   measures developed by professional foresters, conservationists and  scientists, among others that combines the perpetual growing and harvesting of trees with the long-term protection of wildlife, plants,  soil and water quality.
The SFI Program is overseen by the Sustainable Forestry Board (SFB), an independent 501(c)3 organization, which is responsible for maintaining and enhancing the SFI Standard and verification procedures.
