Tembec applied the Criteria and Indicators for Sustainable Forests developed by the Canadian Council of Forest Ministers (1995 version) to the FML01. The report includes background information on the development of the indicators as well as the process taken by the ManitobaModelForest to develop local level indicators. There are also numerous tables providing indicators, goals and targets.

TembecPineFalls Greenhouse Gas emissions, strategy for emissions reduction, goals, new initiatives and projections to year 2010 are provided in this report written for the Voluntary Challenge and Registry (VCR). VCR encourages organizations from all sectors to take greater accountability for greenhouse gas generation by providing a forum for companies to voluntarily report their emissions.

This environmental profile data sheet reports on fiber source, energy use, water use, liquid effluent, solid waste and air emissions for the PineFalls operations, specifically the newsprint mill. The report is part of the Environmental Profile Program, developed under the auspices of the Pulp and Paper Association. The report was verified for accuracy by TerraChoice Environmental Auditing.

The National Forest Strategy Coalition, a collection of governmental and non-governmental bodies, was charged with developing and implementing a new forest strategy for Canada at Canada’s 9th National Forest Congress, held in Ottawa on May 1-2, 2003. Six strategies are outlined in the report.

The Canada Forest Accord is a formal commitment among diverse groups with different perspectives and objectives to work together on a solution to the challenges facing our forest, while using the National Forest Strategy as the reference document.

This is a revised version of the Criteria and Indicators repor tfirst published by the Canadian Council of Forest Ministers in 1995, and subsequently in 1997 and 2000. The report outlines six broad criteria for sustainable forest management, using a science based framework.

A report of Canada’s forests, providing forestry profiles and statistics for each province, as well as articles on climate change, species at risk, criteria and indicators, the national forest strategy, Canada’s wood export program and more.

This report assesses the forestry practices in each province based on harvesting practices (mostly clear-cuts), protection of species at risk and area of forest certified. There is also a map showing accessed forestland in Canada. Main criticisms for Manitoba include: environmental assessment of logging plans are weak, hydroelectric development is a major concern to the boreal forest and clear cutting occurs in provincial parks.

Global Forest Canada, a network of regional and local environmental groups, set out to answer the following questions: What large scale development is occurring in forests, and where? What environmental impacts and economic benefits does this development entail? Who are the key actors engaged in these activities? Are these activities compatible with legislation set out to promote forest stewardship? This report attempts to answer these questions, using statistics, maps and a review process.

This report provides detailed information on the Species at Risk in Manitoba, as determined by the Committee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada (COSEWIC). Status of government legislation is also included where appropriate.

Canada’s Large Intact Forest Landscapes

2003

As part of a global study of large intact forest landscapes, based on remotely sensed data and maps, this report is tailored to Canadian landscapes. The report lists a large number of expert reviewers. Among the key findings are that half of Canada’s forests are large and intact, mostly located in northern Canada; that most of the northern boreal forest is intact while most of the southern boreal forest is not; and only a small proportion of intact areas are located in protected areas.

The Sierra Club has developed indicators for the National Forest Strategy 2003-2008 to gauge the success of provinces and territories in meeting strategy commitments.

National Boreal Standard Draft 2.1

This report is the basis for certifying boreal forests in Canada through the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC), and provides regional interpretations of international FSC principles and criteria. It consists of 10 principles, 58 criteria and a large number of indicators. Many contributors were involved in developing this draft.

Sustainable Forest Management: Requirements and Guidelines

Forest managers wishing to have their forests certified through the Canadian Standards Association are required to implement requirements in the areas of public participation, performance, management, action review and continual improvement, as outlined in this, the second edition of the requirements.

10 Year Forest Management Plans Submission Guidelines

The Forest Act specifies that long range forest plans must be submitted by all companies holding a Forest Management License Agreement. Ten year plans follow these guidelines.

Forest companies submit annual operating plans specifying proposed operating activities for the coming year. Ability to carry out those activities depends on approval of the annual plan by Manitoba Conservation.

The Sustainable Forest Management Network consists of       interdisciplinary teams focused on developing alternative management strategies related to Aboriginal communities, planning and management tools, policies, biodiversity and climate change. The Sustainable Forestry Initiative® (SFI) program is a  comprehensive system of principles, objectives and   performance   measures developed by professional foresters, conservationists and  scientists, among others that combines the perpetual growing and harvesting of trees with the long-term protection of wildlife, plants,  soil and water quality.

The SFI Program is overseen by the Sustainable Forestry Board (SFB), an independent 501(c)3 organization, which is responsible for maintaining and enhancing the SFI Standard and verification procedures.
