| Background
What
rare and threatened species live in FML01?
Tembec assessed rare or threatened
species located in FML01 based on international, national and regional
classifications. Learn
more about rare or threatened species in FML01.
Why
is woodland caribou the main concern?
Woodland caribou (Rangifer tarandus
caribou) are classified threatened in western Canada by the Committee
on the Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada (COSEWIC) and it's
habitat is threatened
by forestry operations.
What
activities are threatening woodland caribou?
Logging, mining, forest fires, utility
development, parasites, predation and increased access by hunters.
Why
is the Owl Lake Herd is of special concern to Tembec?
The Owl Lake Caribou Herd uses the FML01
for calving, migration, and summer and winter habitat. Calving
also occurs in Nopiming Park, in some areas where logging is not
permitted. The Eastern
Manitoba
Woodland Caribou Advisory Committee (Manitoba Model Forest) is developing
a
management strategy for this herd.
A
potential solution: reduce hunting access
Hunting access to caribou could be
reduced by limiting road construction, hunting closures and access
restrictions.
