Abstract
Canadian Catholic dioceses are both spiritual and administrative centres. Their archives are thus important to the church and wider society, given the church's impact on Canadian life. Aditus ad Archivum is a study of the complexities of access to the archives of these seventy-two dioceses, which have been and continue to be influenced by diverse, overlapping, and sometimes seemingly contradictory factors. This thesis provides a full picture of the history, laws, policies, recommendations, and other practical realities of Catholic diocesan archives in Canada. This study also introduces the concept of active access: a vision and means of support for greater access to archives. The implications of applying active access are explored by examining how Canadian Catholic dioceses provide information about their archives online. One main conclusion is that overarching church archival policies encourage greater access than is provided by most dioceses, and this thesis proposes ways to act on those recommendations.
